Photo Results Part 2

I was able to capture so many amazing photos throughout my time in Puerto Rico and wanted to make another separate blog post to feature some more of the pictures that I was able to take and potentially may feature in my magazine!

These pictures were taken on a balcony in Isabella at a restaurant and show an overview of the town and beach.

These are photographs taken at a beautiful waterfall populated by tourists and locals within a rainforest in the mountains.

This photo depicts the mountains that I viewed on the way up to the waterfall.

I was able to take these pictures while getting breakfast in old San Juan. The streets were still somewhat empty at this point as it was so early in the morning.

I took these pictures at a beautiful beach near Yauco while grabbing lunch. More pictures of this seaside are featured below as well.

All of these pictures above were taken in San Juan during the opening on the Sanse festival which included many fun activities and a parade that would span over the following three days as well.

I took the four pictures above whilst touring the Bacardi factory, which originated on the island of Puerto Rico and is a great spot for tourists to learn a little about the islands history.

Hi friends! I have just landed back in Fort Lauderdale FL and I'm missing the Island breeze already. I spent 4 wonderful days on the island of Puerto Rico where I was able to take many many photos of different places and events I experienced all throughout my trip. I included some of my favorite pictures below with short descriptions of where they were taken at.

These two pictures featured above where taken my the balcony of my hotel. These photos show a more aerial view of the town.

All of these photos featured above were taken during my time on a boat ride in La Paguera.

I took all of these photos above while staying in the city of Yauco where I visited many of my family members and toured their gorgeous town.

These photos I captured during sunset at Isabella beach along the photo below of some surfers at the beach. Due to the location of this particular beach it is has very rough waves that are great for surfing. The waves being surfers from all one to visit for this sport.

Photo Inspo & Shot Ideas

Hi guys welcome back to another blog post. Today I wanted to bring you along as I do more research prior to my trip. My trip to Puerto Rico is very soon and I want to ensure I am prepared to take my photos there for my magazine. In order to ensure I am fairly prepared, I researched some photo inspo, taking photos from Pinterest that I want to recreate in some respect, as well as considering the shots used. I included some photos below that I will dissect.

Both of these photos of the water were taken from a magazine I found through Pinterest that highlighted some of the main attractions on the island of Puerto Rico. These pictures of the water while of different scenes were both taken horizontally. The first photo shows the beautiful water, with the photographer capturing the sun peaking out from behind the mountains. This photo captures the movement of waves and the clouds in the air to make you feel like you are there. I want to recreate a similar feeling through my photos.

The second photo also shot horizontally depicts a beach near Sanse. This photo is taken by the shoreline but is framed in such a way that the palm tree is included along with some beach chairs, all while the water meeting the sand remains a focal point of the picture. When taking my pictures I will ensure to frame them to include certain aspects of the area that contribute the it’s overall vibe or feeling.

Photo Research

Before taking my pictures I wanted to further research some of the locations I would be photographing so that I can take in to consideration factors such as lighting. Throughout my trip I will be in vastly different places from times ranging from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and even later than that. I am going to be at the beach, in the mountains, as well as exploring small towns or cities.

On the first day I was going to a Casa Bacardi tour in the afternoon for example and would be by the water. These pictures would be taken at a time where there was lots of sun and I would also be on a moving cart for parts of the tour. This meant I would need to adjust my pictures to accommodate the motion as well as the brightness or glare I may face from the sun and any lack of shade.

When I later go to the city for the festival it will still be bright from the sun for the first half of my time in San Juan. This brightness may be heavily impacted by the amount of buildings and any shadows casted by such buildings. I would also have to be prepared to take pictures in crowds of people during the parade of festival and adjust to others blocking me while attempting to take pictures.

There are many factors I will have to take in to consideration when talking pictures for my magazine throughout this trip, all of which will depend on time location and even my access to equipment. For example, if I plan to take pictures on a phone I must ensure it is properly charged and the camera on my phone works adequately for the duration of the trip. These are just some reminders I will take with me while traveling around the island and documenting my time via photos.

Color and Audience Research

I wanted to do some additional research regarding the color pallet that I decided to usw for my very first magazine issue. While I was able to decide on the colors that I think will work best with my general vision for my travel magazine. I wanted to learn more on the typical feelings these colors may elicit in my audience or what they represent, in order to be absolutely certain that such colors will not only look appealing, but also draw the audience into my magazine and hold their attention in a positive manner.

Below I inserted a picture of the color pallet of scheme I decided on, and will dissect the meaning or feelings associated with each color, and how they may harm or help the overall vibe of my travel magazine, and how it is viewed by readers.

I decided I would reference these two color pallets frequently when creating my magazine, specifically in issue, as it focuses on Puerto Rico as the destination spot. I felt these colors went well with those in the photos I took and represented the vibes of the island. To see how these specific colors would affect my audience I research the color theories, and analyzed my results from such research.

I first found that

Photo Schedule & Trip Itinerary

Hi friends, welcome back to my blog. Now that I have complete a fair amount of research and have made many major decisions for my magazine, regarding the genre, content, and general layout, I must move on to the next step. The time has come for me to begin the process of taking the pictures that I will include in the very first issue of my magazine, 'Tropical Travel.'

For this long-awaited process of taking my photos, my main focus is on the locations, as these are the models for my magazine, seeing as it is indeed a travel magazine. I decided that I would not focus on including any specific products or individuals, however, I do expect that there will be some people in the pictures I take of certain travel destinations that are heavily populated by tourists. Before I get off topic, I should also mention that in order to clearly plan my photos, which revolve around locations, I must know the exact locations I will have access to while on my trip to Puerto Rico, so that I may prepare to photograph these spots.

Today I am creating and outlying the schedule for my trip to Puerto Rico, which in two weeks. I talked with the family members that planned this group trip to find the locations that I will be visiting. I also spoke to my aunt whose family is currently residing in PR. She was able to tell me information about the places we were visiting and was instrumental in planning the itinerary. My aunt was able to inform me on what to expect and what places would be greta for photos. Below I attached the outline of our trip, which is packed full with different excursions and activities. I'm so excited to go to PR, and even more excited to gather great photos for my magazine!

Page Layout Sketches

As I approach my time of creating my actual magazine, I thought that I would sketch out what I want my magazine cover to look like. I have a vision as to what I want for my cover and by using inspiration from many of the travel magazines I love, such as Destination Travel and Traveller, I believe I can create something similar but still my own style.

I plan to create a rough sketch on paper, where I will outline where I want to put certain aspects, specifically text, on the cover. I decided I would create two different layouts of what I envision for my cover. While my drawing skills are not the most impressive, I think these sketches were a great way of putting what was in my head on paper to get a better understanding of how I wanted to create my magazine when using technology such as in design. This sketch will hopefully prove to be a guideline in the future when I digitally make my very first magazine issue!

Timeline

Hi guys, welcome back to my blog! I recently came to the realization that I have a lot to accomplish in these upcoming weeks, and along with this I am on a deadline. I have much to due prior to creating my actual magazine and the process once I start writing and taking photos for the magazine will be lengthy as well. I also want to accomplish this all and have my magazine both completed and edited by March 31st.

In order to stay on track and organize all that I need to research and create before this deadline I felt it would be best to create a quick calendar that outlines what I hope to accomplish in these upcoming weeks. This calendar will outline the next two months and provide a guide I hope to follow in order to stay on track and not procrastinate any work.

Masthead

For my masthead I decided I would use "Travel Tropical." I decided on the masthead through the use of my survey, which I had created previously and got over 50 responses on. From such responses I was able to see which of my ideas for a masthead would be most favored by potential readers. The masthead "Island Time" was the most popular according to my survey, but was followed closely by "Travel Tropical." Ultimately I decided on using "Travel Tropical" for my masthead as it only limited me to highlighting tropical locations in my magazine. On the other hand, "Island Time" would limit me to strictly including Islands as the locations in my magazine and I wanted to be somewhat broader.

After I decided on my masthead for my tropical travel magazine, I needed to choose a font and color to use for this phrase, “Travel Tropical.” Next, I decided to look through different fonts loaded through word and decided on seven different fonts that I liked and was willing to use in my masthead. These fonts I listed below, and felt resemble my vision for my magazine.

Of these fonts above I took inspiration from many of the mastheads I had seen in covers of travel magazines I have analyzed, such as National Geographic and Traveller. I focused on finding a font that had a tropical feel while having more of a straight defined style. I also played around with holding each font to see which way I liked it best. After some deliberation, I was able to decide on three fonts that I liked the most.

1

2

3

The three styles listed above were my personal favorite as I felt they matched the general vibe of my magazine, considering it is specifically a travel magazine focusing on tropical locations. Further, after spending some time in a focus group with three of my peers, I decided that I should decide on a style or font that is less "boring" and not basic. In efforts to choose a more fun or visually interesting font I decided on the three above.

The first font option is seen both unbolded and bolded as I have yet to decide which I prefer. While the unbolded option is clean and sleek, the bolded option may stand out more to readers and be much more noticeable. For this reason I believe that the bolded option may be best for a masthead. Continuously, I selected option 2 as it is visually appealing and appears to have a tropical vibe through the curvature of the letters. This font is commonly used in many of the travel magazines I have read and analyzed, when releasing spreads on tropical locations. Finally, the third font is interesting as it is sharp and bolded. However, I feel that this masthead would stand out, yet may take away too much attention on the cover of my magazine.

After much deliberation I decided I would use the bolded option of the 1st font as I feel that this would make a great masthead that could look appealing across many different covers with vastly different cover photos. Additionally, I plan to use the font in option 2 on my cover, perhaps when writing subtitles or taglines.

Creative Critical Reflection
